The other day I woke up to rain, decided not race in the mud, so I came down to
check out Mike Brooks and his brand spankin’ new bike shop. Mike used to work at
The Bike Doctor in Heath, OH, which is a fairly well known shop in Ohio. He first told
me about his master plan about a month ago, and….BOOM!!! Here I sit (with Doyle
licking my feet). Behind the counter at Three Sixty Bikes!
J-RoD: Of course, everyone’s dream is to open their own business. You made that
dream a reality. Which is sweet. Tell me about Three Sixty Bikes…. How nervous were you
quitting your job and diving into something like this?
Mike: Simply, at Three Sixty Bike Shop we will help you find what you’re looking for. I’ve
been a customer and I know I don’t like people lying or hustling me.
I knew that I know what I’m doing and I know everything there is to know about running a
shop so it wasn’t scary. Once I took out the loan and quit I thought, if you don’t make it
you don’t eat, so I just have tried my hardest since.
J-RoD: How did you come up with the name??
Mike: Well really it started as MB (my initials). When I drew it up the M looked like an 3
and the b looked like a 6. then I couldn’t think of anywhere to go with 36 so I added 0 and
that was it. The name Three Sixty shows that I cover everything.
J-RoD: You chose Zanesville, Ohio as your location. I’m not too far from there and have
never heard of any good bike shops around there. Mainly just folks driving up to The Bike
Doctor, but that’s a bit of a drive. What made you choose this location?
Mike: There is actually two shops here, the fact that you’ve never heard of them is why I’
m here. In the future I want to be able to move closer to Zanesville to be close to my mom.
I looked at Zanesville as a blank slate for my future.
J-RoD: Is there a big BMX or even any cycling scene down here?
Mike: When I started riding there was a lot of bmxers here and there still are a good
amount of people riding bmx. There are three skateparks within 15 minutes of here. They
definatley aren’t as nice as riding the flow dot com, but they are a place to ride. Cycling is
huge here. When I say huge I mean HUGE. Also Dillon state park and The Wilds are near
by with tons of mountain bike riders.
J-RoD: I know that you are just getting started but what brands of bikes do you carry?
And are there more coming soon?
Mike: For bmx I carry DK. It is a fact they have the best complete bicycles on the market,
at the best prices. No company is close to being able to hang with them. I believe in them
as a brand and will only sell DK brand. For adult bikes right now I’m carrying Redline and
Torker, in the near future I will be picking up Jamis bicycles. Jamis is a company that’s
really moving forward and makes a great product.
J-RoD: Since I have been here (about 30min.) you have had about 8 customers and 2
repairs and it’s still early on Saturday morning. Is it usually busy like this?
Mike: It has been its nuts actually. I have done no advertising and I’ve been selling bikes
and accessories and fixing bikes. It makes me feel good about my future here.
J-RoD: I also noticed that you have a vicious guard dog (Doyle). What does he have to
say about his poppa’s new shop?
Mike: Well before we rented it he came in and pissed on the floor, so I’m assuming he
wanted it from the start. He is stoked though he doesn’t have to sit at home all day. The
saddest thing is that sometimes he does think he’s a guard dog. But he’s getting more
chill everyday.
J-RoD: What types of advertising do you currently have going for you?
Mike: None really. I have my facebook up and have signs out on the corner. Soon I will
have three billboards and passing out flyers. Yellobook ad is on the way too, they are
cleaning up on the internet.
J-RoD: Hey looky there, you just sold another bike!
Mike: My shit will make you ride like LANCE son.
J-RoD: What is your vision for the future of Three Sixty Bikes?
Mike: Well I have a pretty ambitious future. I will be making products, apparel, shoes,
bicycle rentals, franchises all the while helping the community and saving people money.
In 10 years I wouldn’t want to have to compete with three sixty bike empire.
J-RoD: Well Mike, thanks for letting me invade your space during this. Is there anything
that you wanna say?
Mike: Have fun, its prolly the best thing you can do before you die.
